What to Expect During Your Child or Teen’s Initial Assessment

Insurance usually allows us to bill for an initial intake appointment, then units of actual psychological testing, followed by a feedback session

When you are coming primarily for an assessment, we will:

  • Schedule and complete an initial intake with both the parent and child or teen
  • Dr. Walker will then schedule the actual psychological assessment

The actual assessment typically involves:

  • Completing a semi-structured interview that screens for most child and adolescent disorders in the DSM-5. This is usually done separately with parent(s), then the child or teen
  • Completing parent ratings scales of your child or teen’s symptoms
  • With parent or guardian consent, obtaining teacher ratings scales of your child or teen’s symptoms
  • Completing an intelligence quotient (IQ) test with your child or teen
  • Completing other individualized tests with your child or teen, as needed, depending on the nature of the assessment, to better assess his or her individual presenting problems
