Defiant and Aggressive Behavior Problems

In Dr. Walker’s view, a defining feature of oppositional behavior is what has been referred to in the research literature as “a reflexive no” (Wakschlag & Danis, 2004). The “reflexive no” is a child or teen’s automatic response to being told to do something by parents, teachers, or other adults.
We treat oppositional, defiant, and aggressive behaviors, including:
- Talking back to parents and/or teachers
- Refusing to follow directions from parents and/or teachers
- Deliberately annoying other people by “pushing their buttons”
- Hitting, kicking, striking other children or adults
- Lying
- Stealing
- Severe behaviors involving destroying toys, furniture, the walls, or other property

Evidence Based Treatment for Teen Behavior Problems
Barkley’s Defiant Teen Manual is an evidence based treatment for adolescents with behavior problems. There is no certification for the Defiant Teen Manual. Dr. Walker is trained in the Defiant Teen manual. In treatment, parents are taught specific parenting skills for modifying their teenagers’ behaviors at home and at school.
